The teenager was a volunteer taking part in an exercise by Knowsley Council Trading Standards and was able to buy cider from Castle Wines on Longview Drive without being challenged about her age. The store assistant had been employed at the off licence for three months at the time of the exercise and told officers that she had received some training on her first day but none since. The Licence Holder, Cheryl Brumskill of Beattock Close, Kirkby, pleaded guilty at Knowsley Magistrates’ Court to underage sale of alcohol and to a breach of her licence conditions. She was fined £100 for the underage sale. She was also ordered to pay £200 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. The premises has been the subject of two licence reviews following concerns about the way the business was being operated. In light of this, formal action was deemed appropriate. Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate and Customer Services, Cllr Ken Keith, said: “This case reinforces our message that selling alcohol to underage youngsters is unacceptable. “We will continue to work closely with retailers in Knowsley through our Get Real campaign to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities and the law surrounding alcohol and other age-restricted goods. “We will continue to carry out these test purchasing initiatives to check that retailers are acting responsibly and properly.”
